So, this is when I (Meredith) switch to first person . . .
As a reader, what could be better than going on a road trip with destination unknown? Not much. As a writer, it’s my job to make that ride as smooth as an old Cadillac sailing down a fresh highway. No bumps along the way.
I heard Madame Mina’s voice long before I wrote the Mystic Café series. Whenever I was alone, she yammered in my ear. Finally, I got to follow her down a rabbit hole, taking dictation along the way, and The Hummingbird Wizard was born. She talked me through the next two books in the series, too. Happily, I still hear voice today. (Mina is urging me into new territory, and I’m going there with her. Stay tuned!)
The Navajo Quartet was born in Bluff, Utah. This was Win’s and my home-sweet-home in a hidden corner of the American Southwest for two decades. Each book walks on a different landscape. Included are a novel, thriller, mystery, and a young adult book. I’m proud of them all.
Going Home was a tribute to our dear friend, Rudolfo Anaya. He understood loss. I understand it now, too, since Win checked out of Hotel Earth. It’s a beautiful, slim book about redemption, grief, carrying on. True love, maybe most of all, about true love.
We also imagined two fantasy books that are rooted in Indigenous mythology and built on a new armature, in part inspired by the miracle of sea life. The miraculous nature of all Nature. These are The Promised One and Shadows in the Cave.
Dive in. Get lost. And let your imagination take the wheel!
